Sewage: Ban water firm bonuses until discharges end, Stafford and Stone’s Lib Dems say

by alecsandiford on 4 May, 2022

Liberal Democrats in Stafford and Stone are calling for bonuses for water company bosses to be banned until they stop dumping sewage in local rivers and waterways.

The call comes as it can be revealed that Severn Trent Water, which provides services for Stafford and Stone, pumped sewage into local waterways 120,666 times during 2020 and 2021.

Despite this, they paid their executives a huge £4,236,300 in bonuses over the same period, which is the second highest of all water companies.

Across the nation, water companies have been routinely dumping raw sewage into rivers, lakes and coastal areas, including 772,000 discharges over the last two years.

Stafford and Stone’s Liberal Democrats are calling for a Sewage Tax on water companies and a ban on water bosses bonuses until they stop dumping sewage into local waterways.

Commenting Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Stone, Alec Sandiford said:

“It is shocking that our local water companies have been allowed to pay eye-watering bonuses to their executives, while pumping our waterways with raw sewage.

“The Conservatives should be forcing water companies to stop dumping sewage into our rivers instead of letting them get away with it.

“Liberal Democrat plans for a sewage bonus ban would stop water company execs being paid a penny in bonuses more until our waterways are protected from sewage dumps. These bosses should be made to hand back the millions of pounds already received in bonuses to help clean up their mess.

“It’s time to send a message to the Conservatives that they cannot let water company bosses get away with pumping raw sewage into our rivers and beaches any longer. Every vote for the Liberal Democrats in May is a vote for a strong local champion who will stand up for their local community, clean rivers and countryside.”
